Client: European Union

Consortium: Fundacion Dominicana Compite, TASTE, Agrofair and GSI.

Objective of the Assignment: To provide concrete recommendations at the farm and watershed level for increasing water use efficiency and productivity in the banana-producing regions in Dominican Republic.

How we did: We developed the Geographic Agricultural Water Footprint Calculator GAWFC in order to calculate the water footprint for a sample of 102 banana producers spread across the The Yaque del Norte and Yaque del Sur river basins in Dominican Republic. We linked the water footprint results to current irrigation practices, water losses and levels of crop water stress per farm, as well as the water scarcity situation in the watersheds of interest. We found out that there is large potential for improvement in the water use efficiency for banana production. Read the full report (in Spanish) here.
